Lithogenous sedimentary rock.
This sample is siliceous mudstone (mostly quartz silt bearing some fossil diatoms) deposited in an offshore continental shelf environment. The original sediment was heavily bioturbated so it lacks bedding structures. The red lines on this sample is iron staining from groundwater.
Miocene age, Santa Cruz Mudstone, Santa Cruz County, CA.
